House Description
A Royal Warrant and almost 250 years of champagne producing experience make Champagne Lanson a brand to be trusted. Champagne Lanson, formed in 1760 in the Champagne region of France, is the third oldest house in Champagne and one of the most prestigious. It was founded by François Delamotte, who was succeeded by his son Nicolas-Louis in 1798 a Knight of the Order of Malta, who adopted the altese Cross as the Company crest. In 1828, he formed a partnership with Jean-Baptiste Lanson, who, in 1837, gave the company the name of Lanson et Cie. In 1848, they moved into new premises on Boulevard Lundy in Reims, on the former site of a Gallo-Roman villa belonging to the Order of Templars, keepers of the Maltese Cross.
Queen Victoria awarded Lanson the Royal Warrant in 1860 and soon afterwards the company began supplying champagne by royal appointment to the courts of England, Sweden and Spain. To this day, Lanson remains a purveyor of champagne to the British Royal Family. Champagne Lanson produces its champagnes in a unique manner; at no time in the 248-year history of the house has malolactic fermentation been used on any of the champagnes that are produced.
Malolactic fermentation is a natural process widely used in wine and champagne making that converts malic acid to lactic acid. Through choosing to suppress malolactic fermentation Lanson ultimately produces more refined champagnes. Lanson's decision not to employ malolacic fermentation results in the wines being aged for longer with the NV styles benefitting from a minimum of three years ageing and the vintage styles a minimum of five years.
As the champagnes have not undergone malolactic fermentation they are clear, bright, crisp, clean and have the unique ability to age gracefully whilst maintaining their exceptional purity of fruit. Lanson champagnes stay at their peak longer and maintain a bright colour throughout the aging process.
Champagne Lanson has enjoyed the privilege of collaborating with the same winemaker for 38 years, Jean- Paul Gandon - no other champagne house has such a long-standing relationship with its winemaker. Jean-Paul Gandon employs a strict grape-buying policy, only purchasing from specific districts such as Montagne de Reims, Côtes de Blancs and Vallée de la Marne and from known and trusted growers. This ensures that only the highest quality grapes are used.Champagne Lanson has excellent relationships with the growers in the region, and in many casesthe contracts to supply Lanson have been within the same families for generations. All of the growers understand the importance of supplying the Champagne Lanson with grapes of the highest quality.
Tasting Notes
To the eye : The brilliant, limpid colour recalls the characteristic straw tones of the Pinot Noir, with glints of amber. It is lively in the flute, with a fine stream of persistent bubbles
On the nose : It gives an impression of vitality and springtime scents, together with hints of "toast" and from a variety of flowers honey.
On the palate : A bouquet of ripe fruits and citrus create a sensation of plenitude and lightness.
